South Africa is a tourist paradise. For those who like the great outdoors, the country offers an experience not easily to be matched anywhere else in the world. The beauty of its natural wonders, the heat of its sun and the warmth of its people can simply not be found in many other places on earth. Adventure travel in Cape Town, South Africa has been gaining popularity rapidly over the past couple of years.

What does the Mother City, as Cape Town is also fondly known, offer the adventure traveler? In the first place affordability. With a very favorable exchange rate against the Euro, UK pound and the dollar, the country still offers one of the best value for money destinations anywhere in Africa or in fact the world.

Prices are not as low as other well-known budget destinations such as Nepal for example. But then you have to take into account what is on offer. Cape Town boasts a couple of the world's best hotels and more than one of its restaurants have ended up on a 'top ten' list somewhere in the world.

For those on a tight budget Cape Town also offers enough backpackers inns and take-away restaurants to satisfy any wallet. Unfortunately the South African delicacy called biltong is no longer the bargain it used to be, because of rising meat prices. This consists of raw strips of meat that have been seasoned with a particular range of spices and then allowed to dry at a slow pace.

A landmark of Cape Town and also a top travelers destination is the granite massif towering over the city and visible no matter where you find yourself. Table Mountain is deeply adored by Capetonians and forms the subject of many a legend. You can easily reach the summit via the modern cable car, but that won't make you an adventure traveler. To qualify for that you will at least have to head up one of the many hiking trails that will bring you to the top in a couple of hours.

White water rafting is another very popular activity for adventure travelers visiting the city. If you fancy yourself in a canoe rushing down the turbulent waters of a roaring river, head straight for one of the tour operators in the city center advertising this type of activity. Another highly regarded activity is shark cage diving. During this activity you will be lowered into the depths of the ocean in a steel cage, giving you the opportunity to watch sharks from close up without running the risk of ending up as their lunch or supper.

A perhaps more mundane, but equally rewarding activity is the yearly whale watch. At the end of the European summer, whales migrate to the shores of South Africa to breed. To watch these kings of the ocean gliding through the water without any apparent effort is sight not easily forgotten. At a number of the lookout points one can actually get remarkably close to them. Cape Town is of course situated in prime wine producing country. No visit to the Mother City would therefore be complete without a visit to a wine cellar for some wine tasting and perhaps a delicious lunch accompanied by the local wines. This is the perfect way to round off a couple of days of adventure travel in Cape Town, South Africa!
